Abstract

Since the eighteenth century, societies have undergone successive industrial revolutions, each reshaping labor markets through disruptive technologies. From steam engines and electrification to digitalization, these shifts have altered how work is organized and valued. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as the hallmark of a new era. Unlike past technologies, AI not only replaces repetitive tasks but also introduces algorithmic systems for monitoring, management, and decision-making that redefine the structure of work itself. These developments create both opportunities and risks, raising critical questions about employment stability, workers’ rights, and social equity. This chapter examines AI’s impact on labor markets, workplace structures, and workers’ rights, highlighting job polarization, algorithmic management, and workplace surveillance. It also explores how social workers can respond by advocating for technological fairness, supporting displaced workers, and engaging in policy and ethical debates, positioning the profession to help shape a more just and inclusive AI-driven workplace.
